Buying a second-hand stairlift privately — from Gumtree, Facebook Marketplace or a friend of a friend — looks cheap on paper. In practice, the rail is almost never the right length, the batteries are usually flat, and there's no warranty when something fails six weeks in. A properly reconditioned stairlift solves all three problems and still comes in at £995 fitted.
Our fixed prices
| Type | Fitted price | Lead time |
|---|---|---|
| Straight stairlift | £1,995 | 24–48 hours |
| Reconditioned stairlift | £995 | 24–48 hours |

All prices include the free home survey, installation, handover and a 12-month warranty.
Second-hand vs reconditioned — the honest difference
| Private second-hand | Our reconditioned | |
|---|---|---|
| Headline price | £200–£500 chair only | £995 all-in |
| Rail | Wrong length for your stairs | Cut to your exact run |
| Batteries | Usually dead | Brand new |
| Motor & gearbox | Unknown history | Workshop tested & serviced |
| Seat, belt, sensors | Worn or missing | Replaced if worn |
| Fitting | DIY or pay extra | Included |
| Warranty | None | 12 months parts & labour |
| Total real cost | £700–£1,200+ | £995 |
A second-hand chair is only the chair. You still need a rail cut to your staircase, a working battery pack, and someone qualified to bolt it to the treads and certify it. By the time those are added, the saving against a reconditioned unit is gone — and there's no one to call when it stops working.
How our reconditioned lifts are prepared
- Stripped in our Manchester workshop — chair off the rail, motor and gearbox out
- Wear parts replaced — seat belt, footplate sensors, key switch, brushes
- New batteries fitted as standard
- Motor and gearbox tested under load
- Rail cut to your stairs at install — never a reused rail from a different house
- 12-month parts and labour warranty
When second-hand makes sense
Almost never, unless the lift is being moved within the same house and the staircase hasn't changed. Even then, the batteries are usually due. We're happy to assess and re-commission a customer-supplied unit on a chargeable basis — but we don't recommend buying privately if the goal is a long-term, reliable lift.
