The Stannah 420 and 600 are straight rail lifts and share the same removal method. The 260 is Stannah's bespoke curved lift and needs a different approach because the rail is unique to your staircase.
Straight stairlift
The 420 is Stannah's core straight model — swivel seat, powered footrest options and a rail fixed to the treads. Removal is straightforward: unfasten the rail brackets, lift off the carriage, disconnect the charge points and make good the fixings.

Straight stairlift
The 600 series shares the same rail engineering as the 420 but with a heavier seat unit. Two-person lift for the chair, then the rail comes off in sections. Battery packs are removed for safe disposal.

Curved stairlift
The 260 uses a bespoke curved rail welded to the shape of your staircase. Removal takes longer because the rail is cut into sections, brackets are individually unbolted, and the twin-tube rail is manoeuvred out of the property.

The same five steps apply to all Stannah models — the curved 260 just takes longer at step 4 because the rail is cut into sections.
Stannah lifts run on 24V sealed batteries in the carriage. Switch off at the isolator, disconnect the batteries and remove them for safe disposal — they should never go into general waste.
The seat lifts off the carriage after releasing the swivel lock. Two people is safer — a Stannah seat unit weighs around 25–30 kg.
The drive unit slides off the end of the rail. On the 260 curved lift, the carriage is unclipped at a straight section before the rail is cut.
Stannah rails are fixed with brackets bolted into the tread nosings, not the wall. Unfasten each bracket in turn and lift the rail clear. Curved rails are cut into transportable sections.
Every tread will have small bolt holes. Fill with wood filler, sand flush and touch up the carpet or stain. Vacuum the treads and skirting where dust has built up under the rail.
Stannah drive units are heavy, batteries are sealed lead-acid, and rails are bolted into the stair treads under tension. Two-person lifting, insulated tools and battery-safe disposal are essential. If you're not sure, book a professional — a full Stannah 420 removal typically takes a two-person team under two hours.
Once the Stannah is out of the house, there are three sensible next steps depending on its age and condition.
